Summer Reading for High School Students Preparing for College

Enjoying a good book!

High School takes up a lot of students’ time. There isn’t much free time for pleasure reading. But did you know that reading helps increase vocabulary, learn something new and encourages relaxation. Make time during breaks to read something…………anything!

Summer is fast approaching, and it is the perfect time to select some books to read on the beach or on vacation. With the volume of homework that students must manage all year, it can be hard to find time to read for pleasure. Remember the joy you get from reading a riveting story and not wanting to put it down? Summer or school break is the perfect time to reach for the reading list and pick a book that may challenge your mind or can simply take you off into the world of fantasy. Barnes & Noble, Amazon, and Pinterest all have lists of books in any genre worth checking out.

Here are 10 of my favorite books I share with students:

Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo

Educated by Tara Westover

Evicted by Matthew Desmond

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Invisible Child by Andrea Elliott

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

A Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley

Breathe and Count Back from Ten by Natalia Sylvester
