Making College Friends 101
Hanging out on in the dorm!
Everyone is just trying to find their people, just like you. Be yourself, take a few chances, and know that it’s totally normal to feel a little nervous.
Hey students! College can feel like jumping into a new TV show where you don’t know the plot or the characters yet. But don’t worry; everyone’s just as new to this as you are! Here are some lighthearted, super-doable ways to make friends and start feeling at home.
Go to Campus Events (Free Food and Fun)
At the start of the year, colleges roll out everything, such as concerts, club fairs, and—let’s be honest—the best free snacks you’ll ever eat. Grab someone from your floor or show up solo; either way, you’ll meet people who are just as eager to make friends as you are. Bonus: You can always bond over the questionable pizza.
Say “Yes” to Hanging Out
If someone invites you to join a group for dinner, a walk, or to check out a campus event, try it! Some of the best college memories start with a simple “why not?”—you never know what fun (and new friends) might be waiting outside your door.
Start a Group Chat (Be the Connector)
If your RA hasn’t made one, take the lead and start a group chat for your floor. Apps like GroupMe are perfect for this. Suddenly, you’re the social glue holding everyone together—and you’ll always know who’s up for a late-night snack run.
Keep an Open Mind
Your future best friend might be the person you least expect. Be open to meeting people from all walks of life—you never know who’ll be your study buddy, gym partner, or partner-in-crime for midnight adventures.
Leave Your Door Open (Seriously, Try It!)
It might feel weird initially, but leaving your dorm room door propped open is like putting up a “Friends Welcome” sign. People will pop in to say hi, ask about your cool poster, or invite you to join them for a game night or food.

Go Door-to-Door (No Trick-or-Treating Required)
Take a deep breath and introduce yourself to your neighbors. Bring some candy or homemade treats if you’re feeling extra friendly. No one can resist a friendly face with snacks! It’s a sweet way to break the ice.
Hang Out in Common Areas
The lounge, the kitchen, and even the laundry room are prime spots to meet people. Bring your homework or a deck of cards and see who joins you. You might end up with a new friend or someone who can explain how to use the washing machine.
Say “Hi” (It’s Magic)
A simple “hi” in the hallway or on the way to class can go a long way. Add a compliment or a funny comment about your shared confusion over the building’s layout, and you’re golden.
Invite Others to Join You
Invite someone along when you’re heading to the dining hall, the gym, or a club event! Even if you don’t know them well yet, people appreciate the gesture—and you’ll have company for whatever adventure awaits.
Consider Rooming with Someone New
It’s tempting to stick with your best friend as a roommate, but rooming with someone new opens even more opportunities to expand your circle. Plus, if you ever need to vent about your roommate, your bestie will still be there for you!
Remember: Everyone is just trying to find their people, just like you. Be yourself, take a few chances, and know that it’s totally normal to feel a little nervous. Before you know it, you’ll have found your crew—and maybe even a lifelong friend or two. College is an adventure, and you’re ready for it!
