Exciting changes are on the horizon for the SAT! Starting in the spring 2024 for U.S. students, the SAT will be transitioning to a digital format. This modern approach will bring a host of new benefits and opportunities for test-takers. So, let's dive into what we know about the digital SAT and its procedures.
Exciting changes are on the horizon for the SAT! Starting in the spring 2024 for U.S. students, the SAT will be transitioning to a digital format. This modern approach will bring a host of new benefits and opportunities for test-takers. So, let's dive into what we know about the digital SAT and its procedures.
1. Personalized Testing Experience: One of the most intriguing aspects of the digital SAT is its computer-adaptive nature. Each student will encounter a test that adapts to their performance in real-time. As they progress through the exam, their abilities will shape subsequent sections. Impressive performance in the initial section will lead to more challenging questions in the following section, which carry higher point values. Don't worry, there's still no penalty for guessing. However, accuracy will play a significant role in maximizing scores for the latter part of the test. Rest assured; the SAT will continue to be scored on a scale of 1600.
2. A More Efficient Test: The new digital format is designed to be shorter, reducing the test duration from three hours to a manageable two hours. This streamlined version will feature shorter reading passages and more straightforward questions, ensuring a smoother testing experience for students.
3. Expanded Calculator Use: Great news for math enthusiasts! With the digital SAT, students can now utilize their calculators on all math sections of the test. While a built-in graphing calculator will be provided for all test-takers, you're also welcome to bring your own trusted calculator if that's what you prefer.

4. Convenient Testing Centers: To ensure the integrity of the test and provide a standardized environment, students will take the Digital SAT at designated testing centers rather than from home. On test days, you can either bring your own computer or tablet, or utilize one provided at the center. Before the big day, you'll download a custom-built digital exam onto your device to use during the test.
5. Practice Makes Perfect: As with any major change, preparation is key! Students planning to take the digital SAT should make ample use of available practice questions and tests. Trusted resources like the College Board and Khan Academy's Official SAT Practice offer valuable opportunities for practice and familiarization with the digital format.
Don't worry if you're not ready to take the digital plunge just yet. The digital SAT won't be available until spring 2024. For those testing before that time, the traditional paper and pencil format will still be available, with the last administration scheduled for December 2023.
A Note on the ACT: For students who prefer the conventional paper and pencil testing method, fear not. The ACT will continue to offer this option. Additionally, the ACT plans to conduct a limited pilot of the online version in December 2023 at select test centers across the U.S., with further expansion in 2024.
